These piles are suited to heavily loaded structures where the soil profile is saturated and ground conditions are unstable. These piles are installed by means of an auger machine acting under a head of bentonite to ensure the stability of the excavation and prevent the settlement of the excavated materials to the bottom of the pile. A starter casing is installed to prevent collapse at the top of the pile. During drilling of the pile the excavation is filled with bentonite at all times to prevent collapse.
Once the founding level is reached the excavation is cleaned out using the drilling bucket. If necessary further cleaning is carried out by airlifting whereby the contaminated bentonite is replaced with clean bentonite. When cleaning of the pile bottom or socket has been completed the reinforcement cage is placed in the pile. The concreting process is then carried out using tremmie pipes. Concrete levels are monitored at all times by means of a sounding wire to ensure embedment of the tremmie pipes until the final design level of the concrete , allowing for a minimum of 1 meter trim height is achieved.
Pile sizes range from 900 mm to 1 500 mm diameter with load capacities ranging between 4 000 kN to 10 600 kN. Maximum pile depth 40 m.
