The steel tube piles are installed by means of a crane rig using a leader with an open or closed ended tube and cylindrical internal hammer. This type of pile is mostly suited to river bridge foundations and marine construction work. The installation procedure is as per the driven cast in-situ pile except that further lengths of tube are added by welding when required until the founding depth is reached.
When the required set or founding level is reached the reinforcing cage is placed into the tube and a high slump self compacting concrete is introduced. It is common to only reinforce the top 13 meters of the pile due to the permanent thick steel wall casing.
Pile sizes range from 150 mm to 600 mm with typical load capacity from 125 kN to 2 500 kN. Depths of up to 58 meters are obtainable.
